The Air Force developed two new flight jackets in the 1970’s; a summer jacket called the CWU-36/P and the winter CWU-45/P. The design is so well liked that it is the standard jacket for air forces around the world and is even popular among civilians.

Gibson & Barnes used the Air Force’s original CWU patterns to design a leather jacket that looks just like the military CWU-36 and 45. In fact, it looks so much like the military jackets that several government and military units use it as a uniform jacket.

We make our leather CWU from grade-A, chrome-tanned, semi-aniline leather. The lining is polyester twill with textured nylon cuffs and waistband. A solid brass zipper closes over a leather storm flap to keep out the wind.

Gibson & Barnes’ CWU jacket has the same action back the Air Force included in its original 1978 design. In the 1980’s they replaced it with a plain one-piece back, but the older action back looks so good and is so comfortable that we kept it.

Two military cargo pockets give you lots of room for your gear, and welt pockets behind the cargo pockets keep your hands warm. We removed the military sleeve pocket and nametag hook & loop, but added a leather-bound inside pocket for your wallet.
