VF-192 was established as VF-153 in March 1945. Its first deployment was aboard USS Antietam (CV-36) in March 1947 flying F6F Hellcats. After that deployment, the squadron’s designation was changed to VF-15A, then a short while later to VF-151.

In 1949, the squadron began training in the F8F Bearcat at NAS Alameda, California. The following January they sailed aboard USS Boxer (CV-21). Upon their return they transitioned to the F4U Corsair.

The squadron was re-designated VF-192 on 15 February 1950. It deployed aboard USS Princeton (CV-37) in November 1950 and March 1952, flying combat missions in the Korean War.

The Golden Dragons moved to NAS Moffet Field, California in 1953, entering the jet age when they transitioned to the F9F Panther. The squadron then deployed aboard USS Oriskany (CVA-34) in September 1953. During that cruise they participated in the filming of the Hollywood film, “The Bridges at Toko-Ri.” After filming, they adopted the name, “World Famous Golden Dragons”. This patch was used by the squadron at the time the film was made.

Over the years, the Golden Dragons served with great distinction in both the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Shield. Today, the squadron flies the F-18 Hornet, a frontline fighter-bomber.
